"Sun of the City" is a project to make a sundial drawn on a wall to make use of existing constructions in urban spaces.
This is my fifth project taken place in Katsurao, Fukushima.
While previous sundial projects have used the walls of buildings to create large sundials, in Katsurao Village I made 40 small sundials using old wood from the “Hyakkoku no Ie” house, which used to be in the village and items given by villagers, and placed them in a circle. The “Hyakkoku no Ie” was a large house that was regrettably demolished by many people after a part of the difficult-to-return zone was lifted in Katsurao Village, and the building materials inside the house that had not been affected by radiation were left behind. The sundial is set to the latitude and longitude of Katsurao Village, raising questions about the relationship between our identity and place.
Dimensions: 500 × 500 × 130 cm
Materials: Old timber from Hyakkoku-no-Ie and items donated by residents of Katsurao Village
Commissioned by: Katsurao AIR (Katsurao Collective)
Production support: Mitsunori Kimura, Taketsune Hayashi, Shunsuke Nakako
